basically the idea is that if an alien civilization is sending out a signal somewhere in the billions of ghz they'd use something that is universal, like the frequency of hydrogen times pi which is the lines in a hydrogen atom times the ratio of the circumference to diameter of a circle. ok tl;dr hydrogen times pi results in a universal? quantity no matter the base (base 7, 8, math etc) you use.

In other words, we have to dig ourselves out of our own mess. If "they" fixed it for us, we would learn nothing and even likely blame them and many would worship them and so on. This was my favorite movie growing up. Now it bores me but for positive reasons rather than negative. It opened up a lot of possibilities for me as a teenager in my own thoughts which lead to many other great great things.? A perfect movie for the times. But don't expect open commerce with aliens anytime soon. With 7/8th's of the worlds population still held by religious thinking, greed and 300+ countries clamoring for power, it would pose a threat both to them and to us. Sad, but quite likely.

There's a scene where Ellie (Jodie Foster) is arguing that? it should be removed, but the human designers said they wanted some sort of protection for the traveller. The implication is that it was a huge mistake and they should have trusted the alien design: if she hadn't gotten out of the chair she would probably have been killed when it hit the wall.
