I own a Fallkniven U2, F1, S1, A1, and an ESEE 4 and 5. My favorite of? all these blades is the Fallkniven A1. It's the perfect weight for just about all tasks, and it has a really nice length to it. When I first got it I thought it was a little heavy, but u get used to it quickly and then smaller knives seem weightless! It chops well when needed, and it slices quite well for how thick and long it is. My second favorite knife would be the Fallkniven F1. The U2 is a great EDC pocket knife, too.

Those? knifes are useless, too short for chopping and too thick for cutting properly. The thickness would put a shit load of resistance through your cutting medium.

The F1 was designed for the Swedish air force, made by Fällkniven in Boden Sweden. I have a F1 and a S1 and they are both the best knifes I have used. The F1 is 15 years and been used every? week since I bought it, it is a true workhorse!

You forgot? to mention that if your mostly in wet environments you will choose the fallkniven cause most barkies have carbon steal not all but most thats why i have both for just camping or in wet environments i dont like dealing with oils and what not

I think the S1 is the perfect all-around compromise knife. It sucks as a small knife for whittling and carving, and it pretty much sucks as a medium sized chopper. :D Can it do both if pressed into survival duty? YES, and that's why it's the perfect compromise. If I had to take one single knife into the woods for survival, it would probably be an S1. If I could also bring a pocket chainsaw with me, that'd be even better, but not absolutely necessary. I love my A1 for bigger? duties.

I like the Fällkniven better,I have had the Bark river Bravo2.but Kraton is much more grippy than Micarta,safer ,Micarta looks good though.But for function i prefer in many cases the Kraton,except for my Junglas :-).I agree on using a stone instead of those magic? sticks and god knows what more to sharpen a knife.Great video !

The F1 has held up for me for over 5 years now. I didnt try to keep the convex blade sharp - I took a few hours out of my live and ground a 2mm 23dgree angle on the edge with the? fallkniven dc4 sharpening stone. It's an awesome knife, it has survived being dropped off a cliff, battening, hammering into wood and my relitavely careless ownership. i expect to leave it to someone in my will in 20 or so years. hope that helps

7 years ago I buyed my first F1, after that i have tried maybe 100+ different knives for bushcraft (or better, general purpose outdoor use)... Now i am returned back to the F1 because is close to perfection (for my needs). Stainless steel (some time i found my carbon steel knives get rusty in less 24 hours; i can' t manage it), 148 grams,? pretty easy to resharp (not like carbon steel but 100 time better than D2). The only similar knife is the Enzo Trapper in S30V; I love them both...

People go for Scandi for a couple of Reasons - The major one is that the Scandi Grind is super easy to sharpen, even for beginners, and the second is that a Scandi Grind can make longer and thinner feather sticks for fire starting. The Convex is harder to sharpen, but in my experience does all the same tasks just as well,? its just harder to sharpen.

Great vid and review. Well done. All I could afford before going to Thailand was the Gerber LMF Inf.; though I wanted a Falkniven, and will buy. I don't think you can buy a better? production knife for the money. IMHO Which one to get is the question, but I've always been partial to F1 type size.. My Gerber is holding up pretty well, with a decent sharperner in the sheath; though most of the chores are processing meat I buy at open markets; I hate the serrations!

Cold steel really outdid themselves on that one, with the Natchez. It doesn't have the same practical applications as your much favored OSS, but it is a pure fighting knife plain and simple. I'm sure you've watched vids talking about it.... wicked strong tip, very well balanced, wide belly. I decided to save my wallet a bit and got the SK-5 model, which is still very nice even without being made of alleged "super steel." Hope you a great? holiday, and keep up the great work!

This? is pure personal preference. Both knives are quality, made from 3G steel. The PXL are liner locks and the TK series are lock backs. My own preference would be for the PXL knives but that makes no statement about the TK knives, it is just my personal choice. You won't go wrong with either.

When I said penetrating oil I meant something like WD-40 which I use a lot on my knives. I also use the Sentry tuf-glide which lubes and coats with a dry protectant, which will protect? your non stainless knives from rust. I recommend getting the bottle with the needle applicator. Thats what I use and it is very handy. One bottle lasts a long time. You can find it on the Knives Town website.

I don't think I would disassemble, at least not for the purpose of lube. Disassembling would be something I would do only if absolutely necessary. Why not just use some penetrating oil or a lube from Sentry? As for the screw sizing, I usually mention in the vid if I can establish what it is. I dont recall if they even are Torx head, but if so; most pivots that? use the torx head screws are size 10 and most handle screws are 6's.

Thats a tough question. I would say it is definitely in the top 3 or 4. I like the Benchmade Rukus, the Al Mar Shrike? and the Spyderco Temperance 2 also but I would still say this knife is at the top of the knife food chain.

A diamond sharpener is not a necessity, but would make the job go faster. The blade was? razor, razor sharp as I recall. I like it better than the FatCat because it has a clip and I think it is more knife than the TomCat. Its thick and rather heavy, but thats how I like my knives, but is not to everyones taste I know. This is a lifetime knife, no doubt about it.

? Layering is not obvious no. In Micarta and G-10 the layering only shows a lot if the thickness changes. Then you get the figuring where the layer edges show and it looks like a topographic map. But if the thickness is consistent then the layering really doesn't show much.

Maybe the f1 is more comparable to the bravo1. The clip point is not so good battening, the convex? grind on my f1 makes for an excellent all-round blade and it keeps an edge. Your weather reminds me of many scotish mountain trips ive done in winter where I found the f1 excellent in a cold cloved hand. Excellent real world review where you find out what works for real

Craig, I went ahead and bought an S1. One thing I have found with the Fallkniven and which has been observed by others is that the convexing is not uniform between different knives of the same designation. BRKT seem to have got their act together in the convexing department in a way that nobody else seems to have achieved. I would love to buy a Bravo1 (or his little Gunny brother) but I live? in the UK where the thieving gov't taxes US imports to the eyeballs. It's outrageous!!!

Excellent. Because of the need to operate as well as possible when it's cold or wet, or cold and wet, and the fact that the blade is longer suits a tad better for batoning, the S1 wins. Also the sheath? is a tad better. Too bad it doesn't cut as well as the Bravo1, but perhaps it could have been sharpened? Thank you for an excellent demonstration.

I like to have rain gear that is absolutely reliable no matter what. Then some good (synthetic) insulation layers. We get way too much rain out here to mess around with any chance of getting wet. It's a lot different than other parts of the country where you can get a chance to dry. Out here, you won't get that chance. It can rain for days and stay wet. Even? getting a fire going and sustained can be extremely difficult. Rule #1 is don't get wet.

Now I'm beginning to think that the methods that I read about and see on YouTube for keeping warm and dry are not nearly reliable as simply having clothes and rain gear that are by themselves, capable of providing the necessary warmth and rain protection. . Thanks for the reply Craig. I too, would never normally go sticking a quality knife in the ground but the S1 is pitched between the F1 & A1, both of which are marketed as "survival" knives. For me, that includes being able to root a bivvy? in hard ground - hence the question. In the end I've bitten the bullet & bought an S1, it's £75 ($115) cheaper in the UK so price made a difference here. Can't report on it yet as not field tested. I have not chipped? my Fallknivens except a little on the 3G initially. But after I sharpened it it appears to have stopped. But I would never use a knife to dig or deliberately cut bone. That will ruin any blade. The VG-10 steel of the Fallkniven is easy to sharpen, especially if you use their DC3/4 sharpening stone. The tips hold up fine for making holes in wood.

I like the Fallkniven F1 as an all around hiking blade. It's thin, relatively light, and very strong. Honestly these lifetime warranties are overrated. Unless? you are absolutely abusing your gear there is no reason why a couple year warranty wouldn't suffice. So don't let that be the only deciding factor. The S1 is also nice if you want a longer blade with clip point. The BRKT Bravo 1 is fine if you want a beefier blade.

Good video Craig, have you had any problems with the S1 blade chipping? I've read a couple of reports where this has happened after the blade hit bone and also stones when digging out holes in the ground. Also, how hard is it to sharpen these knives in the field? I noticed that the Bravo1 was a bit sharper out of the box but that was perhaps just the result of these? 2 examples as I've seen reports of BR's being delivered dull. Finally, how do the tips hold up when making holes? Thanks again.

I love these knife test videos, I really like seeing how various knives stack up. But I think the Seal Pup is miscast in the wilderness survival role; IMO it is specifically designed as a combat/fighting knife, with a little utility functionality almost as a side effect of the blade design. It can function fairly well as a wilderness blade, but not nearly as well as a blade specifically designed for wilderness survival; again just my? opinion. Hope to see some new winter testing videos!

The fishwolf looks dull as heck...you should have wiped the oil off if that was really the issue. For the chopping test it should be noted that you get more leverage by using the blade? farther out, which is a valid difference among these knives that should be accounted for.

i like the review, although it's not really? an apples to apples type setup. you cant do a sharpness test on paper with serrated blades versus plain edges. silly to think of it as they are two different tools with different purposes. also, the seal pup and nw ranger have the same blade steel and the same blade angle. i have the plain edge on both of mine and find them to be of identical cutting capability and edge retention. anyway, like the vid - keep up the good work!

The F1 has a convex edge. It is easy to keep it sharp when using a strop and polishing compound (green and gray). The DC4 I'll use for field use touchups,? but it is hard to keep the convex edge razor sharp with it. Best to use a strop. You can also carry a piece of leather with the polishing compound on it, but I found that the DC4 works well enough for short trips that I just use that instead.

I have bought the 3G version because I liked the VG10 so much. After using the 3G on several multiday trips now I can say I like the VG10 version better. The 3G is getting small nicks in the edge from basic non-abusive usage. I don't know what is going on with it, but the VG10 is 1/2 the price and doesn't have this problem and still holds a great edge. So get the VG10 and save your money on the 3G.?

Sorry to hear about rolling an edge. This has not happened to me with the VG-10 steel. Although I have been seeing micro chips? happening pretty easily with the 3G version. I recommend sticking with the VG10 in this knife based on my experience with both.

i did like the review.my experience with the knife was slightly different concerning the edge. that little micro V edge it came with was very sharp, but it rolled easily. so i got rid of it and put a slightly steeper convex on it. I think VG10 is good steel but i carved a spoon and it kinda lost its edge. it was easy to get it back only with a strop. i have a stainless mora clipper and with about the same amount of carving, i found the mora had a better edge in the? end.

I have both an F1 and a BK2. I seem to find myself using the Bk2 more. I dont carry a saw or an axe, just a knife and the BK2 and chop and split, all in a small package. Maybe I just dont know how to properly use the F1. Honestly though, maybe look into a BK9.? Same weight as a BK2 but it's bigger so it'll chop better.

Man those are my 2 favorite knives so that is a very tough question. That's why I have them both. You really can't go wrong with either one though. I think you'd probably get a little patina in time, but nothing bad if you take care of it like you mentioned. The knifes have quite a different feel. The F1 handle is a little better in the cold but the? Bravo 1 is very good looking and more sculpted. I love the A2 steel too. Both work excellent. For me, it's a slight edge for the F1.

The BK2 is officially gone? and now I have nothing but cheap (but good) Mora's and Buck's. I also saw your video review of the Bravo 1 and I can't decide between the two. Which would you prefer if you had to choose 1? I live in the Southwest...humidity is not an issue. Also, I don't like the patina...oiling and cleaning would not be an inconvenience, but I wonder if that's enough to stop the patina on the Bravo. Good question. I have considered the BK2 on? several occasions, but I've never found a need for it. It is very heavy for its size...basically its a chunk. If I'm going to get a heavy knife I want it to be much longer. So I would recommend the F1, because it is just so usable for so many things. It is very easy to handle and get the detail work done, yet is a very strong design that will last. Yes, it is a very different style knife than the BK but is suits my needs much better. Thanks!

Great video! You pretty much hit on all points? of the F1. I have to say, nothing much beats an F1/pocket saw combo...although I tend to prefer pocket chainsaws for their smaller size. Now if I could only carry one single survival tool, I think it would have to be the S1, although that depends on how skillful you are with your knife. The greater the skillset, the smaller the size of the knife you need to carry with you. The A1 is just a little too big for those smaller tasks. Thanks again.

It's a convex grind. I haven't used the Master Hunter, but I've heard its decent. I know its a little bigger than the F1, but pretty similar design. It is flat ground though, and I prefer convex. I have also heard that it is full tang but don't know for sure. However, I know the F1 is. That's really all I can say since I have? no use with it though. Thanks.

Yes I have sharpened it and it is not hard to do. I don't sharpen it after every use though. I have used the knife 3 or 4 times the way I did in this video since I last sharpened it, and you saw how it did. I don't really do paper cutting tests after each use but if I can do what I did in? this video after a couple other uses, then that is good enough for me. I think it holds a good edge. For sharpening I use sandpaper and a mouse pad, and it works pretty well.

Well I might at some point but I've got a list? of other vids I want to get done first. But this video does show things that I definitely don't want to do day in and day out with a Mora.....and it is because of the strength advantage that the F1 has. Like striking the pommel end with a baton to drive the knife into wood, or any kind of prying, or frequent batoning. There's no way a Mora will hold up to regular use like that...and those types of things are not over-use or abuse.

I have been drooling over? the F1 for a while but it's a tad expensive for my taste. It has a convex edge so I'm surprised you got the edge that sharp with the edge pro. I guess you just put a micro V grind on it.

Adam...any thoughts you can share between the F1 and the S1 in regards to being a solid choice? for backpacking and general outdoor use? The F1 seems like the blade might be just a bit too small for some tasks if one found themself in a survival situation. Looking for the smallest blade possible that adequately performs the most tasks.

There use to be a website called knifetestsdotnet or knifetestsdotcom (can't remember exactly) and they would do knife tests of cutting paper, chopping logs, flex and snap test, bend test, etc. They took the site down but if i recall correctly the Fallkniven performed very well. I wanted to add that a pretty paint job, a sleek design and a high price tag suckers many! I always tell my kids that you can not pick much of anything based on price and appearance. Form should follow function and only results count when shopping for tools. That tool could be a trumpet, a rifle, a knife, or anything else that you need to depend on. The problem? is few people "depend" on their knives for much more then cutting rope or opening box's for most of the year. To most eye candy!!!

The fact that you can set your own bias aside and let the results speak for themselves is refreshing! I would not worry about the detractors. I think you should consider retesting sog seal pup elite in future. I dont know what happened to yours before shipping, but mine is shaving sharp (I actually shaved my arm up to elbow) out of the box and it push cuts 550? paracord effortlessly. Also, it has done much better in reviews by other youtubers so I think yours was defective. But thanks a lot for your review anyway. Your testing methodology is very good and infromation given about the other blades should be perfectly valid.

I have the sog seal elite. It has literally saved my life more than once. After I decided 2 replace it with my? ka-bar while deployed in iraq jus after the invasion of iraq (USMC) and I think its a great knife still have it and is now sharper than when first bought cuz I sharpend it should reconsider it

Any longterm updates on the SOG NW Ranger? Any thoughts on edge holding and toughness? I've been anxious to try one out, but like many others I am hesitant due to the AUS-8 steel.
